Getting to the Bones of the Matter

Challenge

We were asked to create an invitation for a new fund-raising event, the first “Evening of Science,” hosted by the Science Club at the University of Great Falls. The club’s objective was to build a connection with the local medical and medical research community. This project was pro bono—no money for media or production.

Banik Solution

  • Banik’s creative team developed a direct mail piece that physicians would recognize: a mock x-ray delivered in what appeared to be an inter-office consultation envelope.
  • We talked a friend into providing a real x-ray of our art director’s posed hand and forearm, then used Photoshop tricks to add the canape´.
  • The invitations were produced in the Banik art department by laser printing on transparencies. We also created the custom envelopes for the mailing, with a hand-stamp: “Immediate consultation required.”

Banik Results

The docs showed up—and they are one of the toughest audiences on the planet, if you ask us. Apart from the success of the event in enthusiastic attendance and dollars raised for the fledgling Science Club, the invitation garnered national and international awards for creative excellence. “An Evening of Science” was featured in the graphic industry’s HOW Magazine 2004 International Design Annual. The publication’s description of the project calls the design a complete solution “in every aspect of design and communication,” and the use of innovative materials “brilliant.” The concept and design were also recognized at the 83rd annual Art Directors Club Exhibition Preview and Gala in New York City and selected from almost 12,000 entries to be published in the 83rd Art Directors Annual.

The invitation was also among 244 international design finalists in the 44th Communication Arts Graphic Design Annual. In competition with finalists from Alaska, Idaho, Washington, Montana and Oregon, in all types of media executions (including television and interactive), the 6” x 9” invitation was named Best of Show at the 2003 Northwest Region Ad Federation Awards.
