Challenge
Anticipating a potential flu outbreak both from the seasonal flu and from the new 2009 H1N1 virus, the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services approached us in the fall of 2009 to create a public awareness campaign about the risks posed by these viruses, the differences between them and the best preventative measure against them: receiving timely vaccination shots. The public is often skeptical about the benefits of receiving a flu shot, and with the added complication of the H1N1 strain, confusion between a traditional seasonal flu shot and the dedicated H1N1 vaccination was a potential problem. Educating the public and alleviating its concerns involved conveying a lot of information quickly in an understandable way.
Banik’s solution was to create a series of television spots which made the information itself the star of the show. Using an animated typography approach accompanied by warm voiceovers, the spots spelled out the risks of the flu viruses and the steps viewers could take to avoid them. Moreover, each spot used visual metaphors to illustrate each point along the way to create an engaging and memorable sequence of facts.
